Pigeon Post

The first pigeon post services began about 1890 and were based in Okupu. When the Oreville mine began operating in 1900 the Pigeon Post re-located to Oreville. The ‘town’ was reputed to have around 600 people at it’s peak.

This mining operation ceased in 1918 partly due to declining levels of gold but also because labour was scarce as many young men had gone to the first world war.
